Tips For First Time Progressive Wearers
Why Progressive?
Progressives are the best lenses for multitasking. i.e. Seeing at different distances.
Which Progressive?
All progressive lenses have areas of clarity and areas of distortion. With a better quality progressive, the area of clarity will be larger and the area of distortion will be smaller. This makes for quicker adaptation and greater ease of use.
How to use them?
Progressives are all about habit changing. Some people are more habit oriented than others, and for them the adaptation period can take longer. So persevere and you’ll see, once the habits change, you’ll wonder what you ever did without them.
When wearing progressive lenses just point your nose directly at what you want to see. Watch out for stairs and curbs for the first little while. Your first reaction will be to glance down, but that will result in looking through the reading portion of the lens. Instead, tip your head right down, pointing your nose to the ground to look through the distance portion.
You cannot recline in a lazyboy and watch TV, as you will be looking through your reading area.
Be careful doing shoulder checks while driving, as you will have distortion in your periphery.
By the end of 2 weeks you should be getting quite comfortable with them. If not, please come in and see us. Sometimes a minor adjustment to the glasses is sufficient.
Is the success rate 100%
It’s pretty close. At 4 weeks, 95% of our patients are well adapted to their progressives. For those who aren’t, within 90 days, we cheerfully make changes to their lenses. There is no extra charge for the lens changes and there is no refund.
What about distance only or reading only glasses?
While it’s true that everyone needs at least one pair of progressives for multitasking, many can also benefit from additional, part-time, single vision glasses. For example, distance only glasses are a must for most sports, especially golf, as well as for watching TV while reclining. Reading only glasses are great for prolonged reading, (and near work) especially in bed.
Thinner Lighter Glasses
Are your glasses constantly sliding off your nose? Does your nose hurt at the end of the day due to your glasses? Why not ask for thinner lighter lenses?
Lenses today can be made a lot thinner than in the past, normally reducing weight 30-50% Your lenses will also cosmetically look nicer as the edge thickness will reduce as well.
Glare Free Coatings
There isn’t a day that go by that patients come in asking if there is anything they can do to help with glare. Glare from the computer screen, glare from driving at night, glare from the over head lights. Glare is all around us reducing the amount of usable light from reaching our eyes. With a glare free coating on your glasses this will reduce the glare, alowing more light to reach your eyes and allowing you to see better.
People do say that with the coating their glasses get dirtier faster. This is not entirely true. Your glasses are getting about the same amount of dust, finger prints etc on the lenses you are just more aware of them because your lenses are so clear you see the smudges on them instead of being distracted by the glare.
Sun Exposure and Tanning
Canada is full of outdoors enthusiasts. Whether relaxing, exercising or just working in the sun, there are some important factors to keep in mind. This includes those who enjoy indoor tanning beds especially.
Indoors or out, people are exposing themselves to ultraviolet (UV) rays—to an unprecedented degree. With the increased penetration of UV rays in our atmosphere today, outdoor exposure is not so different from the UV-rich, indoor tanning beds that have been the subject of much debate.
This is true of cloudy days as much as sunny ones. Don’t forget that water and snow environments, as well as higher elevations, also demand UV protection.
Significant exposure to these UV rays can damage your retina, cornea and can cause cataracts or macular degeneration. Ensure that you wear UV-protected sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors for a prolonged time. Sterilized protective goggles are essential for any duration of indoor tanning. In any environment, closing your eyes is no protection from UV, and there is no substitute for proper UV-blocking eyewear.
